The Rudy Ray Show

Union Station, July – August, 2023

For anyone strolling along Front Street this summer,  one of the greatest finds is the weekly Rudy Ray Show.  Rudy Ray, a talented young jazz trumpet player originally from Ghana, has put together an impressive series of concerts for the past 8 weeks with his last show being on Saturday, August 26. Each Saturday afternoon, Rudy has presented unique sounds of a wide range of artists, local and international, from diverse musical genres and backgrounds. His brand of jazz, which includes a mean Strasbourg St. Denis (Roy Hargrove), blends perfectly with reggae, free style hip hop, and Afrobeat.

Everything from performing with the extraordinary Ori Dagan on It Don’t Mean a Thing, If It Ain’t Got That Swing, showcasing young local hip hop artists, and pairing with Waleed Kush Afrojazz, Asiko Afrobeat, DJ Merciless, Stuart Brignall and the Long Beach Band, Jared Higgins, Martin Gomes, Dipo, Neo Soul and Poetry and more, you won’t find a more eclectic show anywhere. The captivating poet and comedian David Delisca holds everything together as MC, with Rudy’s ebullient presence setting a joyful tone each week.

Not only is Rudy’s blending of musical styles a delight for the senses, but it is also a brilliant way to make his music accessible to new audiences. The crowd at Union Summer is made up of all ages and backgrounds, newcomers and aficionados of these musical styles.  Friendships develop between strangers, dancing or swaying in situ, creating an atmosphere that is communal and relaxed.   The seating area is lovely and covered, which has saved a few of these shows from a washout.  And there are some tasty treats and beverages available.

For the last show of the series on Saturday, August 26, Rudy Ray presents Ghanaian music featuring Larry Graves and the Libation Street Band. You’ll want to be there.
